As its protagonist faces a creative crisis, however, it suddenly splinters into a plethora of different styles—documentary, pop musical, melodrama, “post-internet” digital meltdown finale—whose frustration of audience expectations mirrors Ann’s own frustration at trying to understand an unknowable history.
