"Genesis" takes one scene, if not a single second, to evince complete harmony between director and subject. In Philippe Lesage’s award-winning 2018 feature, itself a stealth sequel to "The Demons", Théodore Pellerin ("Lurker", "Beau Is Afraid") and Noée Abita ("The Five Devils") brilliantly portray half-siblings whose adolescent sexual journeys engender difficult questions around honesty, desire, and disappointment. Lesage never averts his eye, nor does his camera fail to capture these remarkably relatable scenarios with anything other than aesthetic bliss: colors that are muted but expressive, or nocturnal sequences that explicate dramatic dilemmas. "Genesis" has all the wonder and fear of new beginnings.
