Speaking up has always been a risky business, but perhaps never more so than in our highly connected and surveilled age, in which even a throwaway comment can become a target for omnidirectional scrutiny and abuse. Both of the films in this pairing focus on individuals who chose to make themselves vulnerable in the name of truth: the NSA contractor Reality Winner, subject of Sonia Kennebeck’s self-titled documentary (2023), would do jail time for leaking documents that exposed Russia’s interference in the 2016 US elections, while the lauded British journalist Robert Fisk spent decades reporting from the frontlines of violent conflicts in the Middle East, as chronicled in Yung Chang’s "This Is Not a Movie" (2019).
