“We started working together as an experiment,” says Anupama Srinivasan, reflecting on two decades of partnership—which has yielded a long-gestating pair of closely observed studies, both hypnotic and subtle. It began with a recognition of the fact that making films predicated on forging a deep connection to a community, like the remote Nagaland village centered in "Flickering Lights" (2023), or on matching the measured pace of scientific research, like the hunt for the hawk moth that structures "Nocturnes" (2024), necessitates “a lot of support”—especially in a country like India, where development funding is scarce. The crafting of such work requires a rare patience, too, richly palpable in the viewing.
