Óliver Laxe has been admired by those with an interest in the mystical side of cinema and the curious compounds created through intermixing documentary and fiction since the appearance of "You Are All Captains" (2010), his feature debut, made in collaboration with students at a filmmaking workshop for impoverished youths in Tangier. Now, the Franco-Galician director stands on the brink of a wider breakthrough. His latest film, the 2025 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize-winning "Sirāt", is a hallucinatory odyssey across the wilds of southern Morocco—its lunar landscapes among the many astonishing vistas of Laxe’s cinema. As "Sirāt" draws new acolytes to his sensorially overwhelming brand of filmmaking, Metrograph revisits his body of work to date.
