Funeral Parade of Roses
Corpses, Fools and Monsters

1h 45m
Directed by Toshio Matsumoto | 105 mins | 1969
Part of the storied output of Japan’s radical Art Theatre Guild, Matsumoto’s dazzling voyage through Tokyo’s Shinjuku neighborhood centers on two gender-nonconforming divas at “Bar Genet” but also doubles as a record of Japan’s avant-garde and subcultures. Leda (Osamu Ogasawara) believes rival hostess Gonda (Yoshio Tsuchiya) is fooling around with Eddie (Peter, a famous entertainer), and their escalating love triangle spills onscreen with genre-bending antics.
