This apparently facetious remark nevertheless captures something of the feeling of the Chilean master’s lauded adaptation of Proust’s seven-volume opus, "In Search of Lost Time" (1913–1927). Beginning with Marcel on his deathbed, Ruiz conjures an opulent memory palace through which a cast of luminaries, among them Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, John Malkovich, and Édith Scob, duly pass and recede.
